| Collected in China, our collection of column bases would have once supported hand-carved wooden columns and were most likely part of a covered porch or doorway. Most are carved from a single block of limestone indigenous to the region and are believed to be more than 500 years old. Many are decorated with geometric patterns while still others are carved with symbols common to the culture. Had they not been acquired by Rhodes Ragen & Smith this simple piece of history would have been lost forever either as the waters from the Yangtze River fill the reservoir behind the Three Gorges Dam or by other modernization in the region. | |||||||||
